Couples Photography That Feels Like Your Relationship
Couples photography doesn't have to mean standing on a beach, looking at the camera and cycling through poses for an hour. I'm much more interested in what happens between the two of you — the way you naturally touch, the way one of you makes the other laugh, the quiet moments, the chemistry and the parts of your relationship that are difficult to manufacture once someone tells you to “act natural.”
I'm Jillian, a couples photographer and filmmaker based in Puerto Morelos, Mexico, creating candid, emotive and cinematic photography throughout the Riviera Maya. My approach combines creative direction with observation. I'll guide you when you need it, create situations that encourage movement and interaction, and then leave enough space for something real to happen. The goal isn't simply to make beautiful photographs of two people. It's to create something that feels like the two of you.
My Approach to Couples Photography
I describe my work as candid, emotive, artful and cinematic, but candid doesn't mean there is no direction. Most people aren't professional models, and I'm not expecting you to arrive knowing exactly what to do in front of a camera. I'll pay attention to the light, composition, location and movement. I'll tell you where to go when necessary, give you something to do or bring you closer together, and then I'll watch what happens.
Sometimes the photograph I was originally trying to create isn't the photograph that ends up mattering. Something happens in between — a look, a laugh, a hand reaching for another hand, or a moment where you forget about me completely. That's usually what I'm waiting for. My job is to create enough direction that you don't feel lost without directing every second so intensely that the photographs stop feeling like you.
What If We're Awkward in Front of the Camera?
Almost everyone tells me they're awkward in photographs. You don't need to know how to pose, you don't need to know what to do with your hands, and you definitely don't need to spend an hour staring romantically into each other's eyes because someone with a camera told you to.
Movement helps. Talking helps. Focusing on each other instead of the camera helps. I'll step in when something needs adjusting and step away when something is already working. You don't have to perform a relationship for me. I want to photograph the relationship that's actually there.
Where to Take Couples Photos in Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos is an incredible place to photograph couples because there is so much variety within a relatively small area. There is the Caribbean, of course, but there are also quiet streets, jungle landscapes, cenotes, docks, palms, textured buildings and the everyday character of a small coastal town in Mexico.
For many couples, the beach is the obvious choice, and it photographs beautifully. But a beach session doesn't need to mean standing beside the ocean for an hour. We can walk along the shoreline, sit together, move through the palms, get close to the water or eventually get completely into it. The wind becomes part of the photographs. So does the sand. So does whatever the Caribbean decides to do that day.
Your session could also take place around Puerto Morelos, in the jungle, near a cenote, at your villa or accommodation, or across more than one setting. We can start with how you want the photographs to feel and choose the environment from there.
The Best Time for Couples Photography in Puerto Morelos
Light changes dramatically throughout the day in Puerto Morelos, so the best time depends on the visual feeling you're drawn to. Sunrise is beautiful because Puerto Morelos faces east and the sun comes directly over the Caribbean. Before sunrise, the light can be soft and pastel, followed by warmer golden light as the sun reaches the horizon. The beaches can also be quieter early in the morning, creating a more intimate atmosphere.
I also love photographing later in the morning, around 9:00 a.m. By then, the light has more contrast and the Caribbean begins to show stronger blues and turquoise tones. The result feels brighter, richer and more energetic than sunrise. Sunset creates something completely different again. Because Puerto Morelos faces east, the sun sets behind the coastline rather than over the Caribbean, giving the beach softer, more diffused evening light. There isn't one universally perfect time; we'll choose based on the photographs you want to create.
Engagement Photography in Puerto Morelos
If you've recently become engaged, your trip to Mexico can be the perfect opportunity to create engagement photographs somewhere completely different from home. An engagement session doesn't need to suddenly become formal because you're getting married. It can still feel like the two of you.
We can walk, swim, dance, explore, have a drink or simply spend time together somewhere beautiful. If you're planning a destination wedding later, an engagement session is also a chance for us to work together before the wedding day and for you to become comfortable with the way I photograph.

If you're planning to propose in Puerto Morelos, I can photograph the actual moment without your partner knowing. We'll coordinate the location, timing, where I need to be and exactly how the surprise will work. I'll be positioned discreetly enough to photograph the proposal as it happens, and afterward we can naturally move into an engagement session while you're both still inside the emotion of what just happened.
That means you don't have to recreate the proposal afterward. You have the real reaction, the realization, the emotion and everything that happens in the minutes afterward. Anniversary, Honeymoon & Vacation Couples Photography
You don't need to be engaged to justify having photographs together. Some of my favorite couples sessions aren't connected to a major milestone at all. Maybe you're celebrating an anniversary or honeymoon. Maybe it's your first trip together. Maybe you've been together for fifteen years and realized most of your photographs are selfies, wedding photos or pictures one of you took of the other.
Or maybe you're simply in Mexico together and want to remember this version of your relationship. That's enough. Not every meaningful chapter announces itself as a milestone while you're living it.
What to Wear for Couples Photos in Mexico
Wear something that still feels like you. I don't want you to look back at the photographs and wonder who dressed you. That said, clothing can have a huge impact on the visual feeling of a session. Natural fabrics and textures work beautifully here, and linen, cotton and clothing with movement interact particularly well with the Caribbean environment.
You don't need to match. Instead, think about how your outfits work together. Colors can complement each other without being identical. And remember that you're going to be moving. You may sit in the sand, take your shoes off or end up close to the water. Choose something you can actually exist in rather than something you have to constantly adjust. Once your session is booked, we can talk through outfits and the overall visual direction together.
Couples Photography Throughout the Riviera Maya
I'm based in Puerto Morelos but photograph couples throughout the surrounding Riviera Maya, including sessions in and around Cancún and Playa del Carmen. If you're staying at a resort, villa or somewhere else in the area, send me the location when you inquire.
Some resorts have restrictions or outside-vendor policies for professional photography, so it's worth checking before planning a session directly on resort property. We can also choose a different location if you'd rather leave the resort and create something that feels more connected to Mexico.
Add Cinematic Film to Your Couples Session
Photography freezes a fraction of a second, while film gives me everything happening around it: movement, voices, wind, water, laughter and the way you reach for each other when you aren't thinking about the camera.
Alongside photography, I create cinematic couples films built around those moments. These aren't traditional interview-style videos. They're closer to short visual films, using movement, atmosphere, emotion and connection to create something you can experience again rather than simply watch. Photography and film can be created together during the same session.
Couples Photography for People Who Want Something Different
You don't need to recreate photographs you've already seen on Pinterest. You can absolutely bring references and tell me what you're drawn to. Send me music, images, films, colors or even an idea that doesn't completely make sense yet. But ultimately, I want to create from what's actually in front of me.
