An Early Morning on the Caribbean Coast
There's something different about photographing people at sunrise. The beaches are quieter, the light is constantly changing, and everything feels a little more intimate before the day begins. This particular morning in Puerto Morelos was supposed to be a simple couples photoshoot. At least, that's what she thought.
He had reached out to me beforehand with a plan to propose, and together we decided to keep things natural. No elaborate setup, no decorations, and nothing that might give away the surprise. Just the two of them, the ocean and a camera. The plan was to let the session unfold as it normally would and wait for the right moment.
Waiting for the Perfect Light
One of the things I love most about sunrise photography is how quickly the atmosphere changes. The morning began with darker, moodier tones. The ocean had so much texture, and the soft light brought out details that can sometimes get lost in the brightness of the day. We spent the first part of the session walking along the beach, capturing natural moments together. I offered a little direction when needed, but mostly gave them space to move and interact in their own way. Meanwhile, he and I were both watching the light. We had discussed the proposal beforehand, but rather than choosing an exact minute, we wanted to wait until the sun had risen enough to create the right setting. And then it happened.
A Look, a Moment, and a Yes
As the sun rose a little higher over the Caribbean, he looked at me.
I looked back.
We both knew.
There was no need to say anything. I was ready with my camera, and he turned toward her, got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.
She said yes.
What I remember most about moments like this is how quickly everything changes. One second we're taking photographs, and the next, something completely unexpected is unfolding in front of the camera. The surprise was genuine, the reactions were natural, and the morning light made the entire scene feel even more atmospheric. There was nothing to recreate or direct. I just kept photographing.
When a Couples Session Becomes an Engagement Session
After the proposal, something shifted.
They were still the same two people we'd been photographing just minutes earlier, but the energy between them had changed. There was more excitement, more closeness, and a different kind of emotion in the photographs. We continued the session along the beach, letting them enjoy what had just happened. The rising sun brought new warmth into the images, while the darker tones of the early morning and the texture of the water gave the entire gallery a beautiful contrast.
I love that we were able to document both sides of the morning. The quiet moments before the proposal, when she had no idea what was coming, and everything that followed. It became more than a collection of engagement photographs. It was the story of how their morning began and how it changed.
A couples photoshoot is a wonderful way to arrange a surprise proposal because it gives you a natural reason to be together in a beautiful location with a photographer already there.
We can discuss the location, lighting and timing beforehand, and create a simple plan for how the proposal will happen without making the session feel staged.
Sunrise is one of my favourite times for beach photography in Puerto Morelos. The changing light gives us the opportunity to create photographs with different moods, from darker, more atmospheric portraits to the warmth of the early morning sun.
And because we're already photographing the two of you, we can continue naturally into an engagement session afterward.
